BeforeThe Devil Knows You’re Dead is a new film directed by Sidney Lumet from a screenplay by Kelly Masterson. It’s Sidney Lumet’s 44th movie\ in 50 years. The story which is told in a chronologically flashed way from multiple points of view is in some ways a classic simple tale of a caper gone wrong.

Hank and Andy 2 brothers played by Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman decide out of desperation and greed to rob a suburban jewellery store. The twist\ is that the jewellery store run by their mother and father.

It is a simple straightforward plan according to Andy \ Hoffman's character who cooks the whole thing up. No one will get hurt , every one will walk away winner. And of course there won’t be a movie, if they didn't go terribly terribly wrong.

This movie is full of really first-rate performances. Ethan Hawke is twitchy, he overdoes a little bit as Hank who is the nervous screwed-up brother, but he is still very convincing and he is a very good foil for Philip Seymour Hoffman who just I think gets better and better who plays Andy as a cold shallow kind of a brute of a man, a very very unsympathetic character who somehow manages to hold our attention. He never wins us over but we come in a very perverse despairing way, to care about this guy and what He is going through. There is a lot of suspense\ there surprises. It’s a very well-made gripping thriller. But it also has an extraordinary moral gravity which I think was what Sidney Lumet brings to this movie. It is a story about crime and punishment. It takes those things very very seriously. It looks its characters in the eye ruthlessly rigorously, holds them up to what are really basic\ standards of decency and diagnoses their failures. And as a result, the movie on every level is just a terrific success.
