This busy junction in Midland, Michigan is a long sleigh ride from the North Pole. But in this purpose-built grotto each year, Santa’s secrets are unwrapped.

I’d like to welcome everyone to the 70th year of the Charles W. Howard’s Santa Clause School.

There’re 80 Santas in the class of 07. Over half are returning students looking to hone their craft.

Hope us strive to be the best Santas that we can be.

They fly in from around the world, Fred’s from Norway, Collin Hayward and his wife Ginny hail from England. This school is 70 years old founded by a farmer who’d been shocked by the standard of the department store Santas in New York. He taught his trainees in a barn. Today’s classroom is a fully real-life Santa’s workshop, they even get coaching on their “ho ho ho”s.

Develop a “ho ho ho” that’s soft and fun. Make it a laugh. You know “ho ho ho”.

And to ensure they aren't slacking their rein into a rousing rendition of a festive favorite at least every 2 hours. Then the Santas are decked out with tips on what to look for in the perfect suit.

Plushness, you know, the thickness of the suit plus, in addition if you look at the quality of the material when you are going to have 100 200 300 kids a day on your lap over(搭接) a 30-40 day period. The suit got to; you know, stand up to the wear and tear kind of things.
The hat is， ur, compulsory?
Well, yeah, for most people.
Are there discussions about that in the Santa community?
AH, yeah, because this really hitch up.

And the art of presentation doesn’t end there for the modern Santa.

After some late night sleigh riding exercises, the real test arrives by minibus the next morning.

The class of Father Christmases hides behind newspapers, so the young guinea pigs aren’t left bewildered while the trainees take it in turns to practice their freshly learned skills on local school pupils. Santas who complete the course receive a diploma which can help secure better gigs. Some more Santas in the state can earn 10,000 pounds for a 6-week stint, a lucrative parting gift for graduates of this school of yore.
