1. President Bush used Osama Bin Laden's own words to defend the war in Iraq. He says the al-Qaeda leader sees Iraq as key to a new world war. He spoke to a military officers' group. The president also said al-Qaeda has been weakened but is still dangerous.

2. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is resting in the hospital after shoulder surgery. He had a torn rotator cuff repaired. He did not undergo general anesthesia but did hand over at least one responsibility to the deputy secretary of defense. Rumsfeld said the cuff tear was caused by an old sports injury.

3. Notes of condolences are pouring into Steve Irwin's zoo in Australia. Known as the "Crocodile Hunter", Irwin was killed by a stingray's barb while swimming in the Great Barrier Reef. He was shooting a television show and video cameras caught the attack. State police are holding the tape for evidence.

4. Ernesto is gone but Florence is on the way. A new tropical storm has formed over the Atlantic Ocean. It is the sixth named storm of the season. It is a weak storm right now but is expected to gain strength.
